2026-09-29 03:30:01

Model Overview

The Geely Cityray is a global strategic compact SUV built on Geely Auto's B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) platform, serving essentially as the overseas rebadged version of the domestic Geely Boyue COOL. Rolled out across various international markets between 2025 and 2026—including Mexico, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Morocco, and Qatar—the C-segment SUV highlights a core value proposition of "modern aesthetics, advanced technology, and efficient performance." The name "Cityray" is derived from "ray of the city," symbolising a dedicated design tailored to the mobility needs of modern urban families.

The Cityray is offered in several variants, namely the GC, GK, GF, and GF+. In the UAE, prices start from 86,500 AED (approx. RM171,600); in Saudi Arabia, it retails between 91,000 and 117,000 SAR (approx. RM174,000 to RM223,000); whilst the entry-level variant in Russia starts at 2,699,990 RUB (approx. RM215,000). In Mexico, the 2025 1.5T version is priced around 549,000 to 589,000 MXN (approx. RM215,000 to RM235,000). Key rivals in this segment include the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, Haval H6, MG HS, and Hyundai Tucson.

Design Language

Penned by Geely's global design team, the Geely Cityray inherits the futuristic design DNA of the larger Geely Starray from the "Star Ray" family. Up front, it features a bold 3D expanding grille flanked by digital aurora LED headlights comprising 256 LED units, delivering a striking visual presence. The sharp headlight clusters incorporate daytime running lights inspired by the northern lights. Down the sides, dual character lines run seamlessly from front to rear, complemented by a dual-tone paint scheme with a black roof and 18- to 19-inch black sports alloy wheels. At the rear, a full-width LED taillight strip housing 258 LED units is paired with a sporty rear spoiler and decorative quad exhaust tips, exuding a sharp, avant-garde urban aesthetic. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,510 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,701 mm.

Inside, the cabin features a wraparound cockpit layout finished with a two-tone colour scheme and soft-touch materials throughout. The dashboard houses a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster alongside a floating 13.2-inch 2K central touchscreen. The interior also boasts 10 ambient lighting zones with 72 customisable colours, as well as a panoramic sunroof with anti-pinch functionality. The seats are upholstered in synthetic leather with 15 mm thick high-comfort cushioning, complete with power adjustability and memory function for the driver.

Powertrain and Performance

Across all markets, the Geely Cityray is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, delivering between 172 hp and 181 hp depending on regional tuning, with a uniform peak torque of 290 Nm. Featuring direct injection, the engine produces a maximum output of 128 kW (174 hp) at 5,500 rpm, with maximum torque spread across a wide powerband from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (7DCT), capable of gear shifts in as fast as 0.2 seconds. The drivetrain is configured as front-engine, front-wheel drive (FWD).

On the performance front, the Cityray completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in an official 7.9 seconds, with a top speed of 195 km/h. Under WLTC testing cycles across different regions, combined fuel consumption ranges between 5.6 L/100 km and 6.3 L/100 km. In addition, the Cityray provides four selectable drive modes—Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Smart—allowing drivers to tailor throttle response and fuel efficiency according to driving conditions.

Chassis and Handling

Built upon the modular BMA platform, the Geely Cityray offers premium underpinnings for a compact SUV. The suspension setup comprises MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link independent setup at the rear. The rear multi-link configuration significantly improves tracking stability, ride comfort, and high-speed cornering composure, effectively absorbing road imperfections whilst maintaining steady body control. Steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system that delivers a light, linear response. Braking duties are managed by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear, with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control (TC) fitted as standard across the range. With a minimum ground clearance of 200 mm, the vehicle easily handles light unpaved terrain.

Cabin and Features

The Cityray offers competitive in-cabin technology and comfort appointments for its class. The infotainment system is driven by a 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip running Geely Galaxy OS 2.0. The 2K-resolution central display features multi-touch capability and anti-glare coating. Connectivity options include Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and USB ports, alongside a 15W wireless smartphone charging pad. Higher-spec variants gain an Infinity premium sound system. Boot space stands at 571 litres, supported by 39 storage cubbies throughout the cabin, with 60:40 split-folding rear seats to accommodate bulkier cargo. In markets like Egypt and Morocco, the Cityray also comes equipped with a 540° panoramic camera system with a transparent chassis view, making tight manoeuvres effortless.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

The Cityray comes well-specified in both passive and active safety. Passive protection includes six airbags as standard across all variants (dual front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags). Its high-strength cage body structure delivers robust torsional rigidity and impact absorption engineered to comply with global crash safety standards.

Active safety is bolstered by an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite. Flagship variants feature Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), and the 540° surround-view monitor. The BSD system provides visual, audible, and instrument display warnings to ensure safe lane changes in congested city traffic.

Market Performance and Reviews

Following its global debut in 2025, the Geely Cityray has shown solid market traction. In the UAE, it goes toe-to-toe with established rivals like the Kia Seltos and Toyota RAV4, capturing market interest through competitive value pricing. In 2024, Geely Morocco registered 521 units, placing among the top three Chinese automakers locally, with the Cityray's 2025 introduction set to further grow its market footprint. In Mexico, Geely has set an ambitious 2025 sales target of 25,000 units backed by a 100-dealer network, with the Cityray serving as a pivotal growth driver.

In terms of customer feedback, the Cityray holds an average rating of 4.39 out of 5 on the Bitauto platform as of May 2026 based on 30 user reviews. Commendations primarily highlight its brisk power delivery, solid interior build quality, refined ride quality from the multi-link rear suspension, and generous tech suite, though some owners noted real-world fuel consumption slightly exceeding official claims under certain driving conditions. As a vital global product in Geely's compact SUV offensive, the BMA-based Cityray has firmly established its place within the overseas line-up of Chinese automotive brands through its robust engineering and market-tailored specifications.
